What is the difference between bump cap and a safety helmet?

Safety Helmets are designed to protect you from object-generated impacts, something falling on your head, such as debris from a roof or a falling tool. Whereas a bump cap is designed to protect you from worker-generated impacts, so, you banging your head on something like a scaffold tube or door.

Portwest’s rapidly expanding head protection product range aims to benefit our customers by combining the most updated styles and standards in head protection, irrespective of job or location. For example, building sites with labour workforce, or site inspectors we have all the colours to help identity people easily, inlcuding a hi-vis bump cap. A wide selection of compatible accessories is also available including ear protection.

EN 812: 2012 standard explained

EN 812 is a European Standard for the protection provided by bump caps and specifies physical and performance requirements, methods of test and marking requirements for industrial bump caps. Bump caps are designed primarily to protect workers from bumping their heads on objects, as opposed to protecting you from items dropped from directly overhead. Because the hazards are different, the testing standards are different.

Bump caps are intended to protect the wearer from static objects (e.g. walking into low ceilings or hanging obstructions).

To achieve the impact test, a 5 kg fl at striker is dropped onto the bump cap from a height of 250 mm, with a maximum allowable transmitted force of 15 kN. Impacts are carried out on the front and rear of the bump cap, with the headform tilted at 30° and 60° to reflect the nature of any impacts likely in use.
