Gas filter cartridges are typically marked using a combination of letters and numbers, e.g. “A2B2E1”.

The letters stand for the filter type. The filter type indicates which hazardous substances the gas filter protects against.

The numbers stand for the filter class, which gives information about the filters absorption capacity. In each case, the filter class applies for the filter type indicated by the letter directly preceding it. Filters in higher protection classes can be used to protect against higher concentrations of gas in the workplace.

As you can see from the example A2B2E1, a filter cartridge can be made up of several filter types (A, B and E), with the same or different levels of filter class. The filter in the example offers combined protection against organic gases (boiling point > 65° C), inorganic gases and acid gases.

Filter Type A
Colour code: Brown- Protects against: organic gases and vapours (boiling point > 65°C)
Filter Type B
Colour code: Grey- Protects against: inorganic gases and vapours, e.g. chlorine and hydrogen cyanide (prussic acid); however, not against carbon monoxide
Filter Type E
Colour code: yellow – Protects against: sulphur dioxide, hydrogen chloride and other acid gases
Filter Type K
Colour code: green – Protects against: ammonia and organic ammonia derivatives
Filter Type AX
Colour code: brown – Protects against: low-boiling organic compounds (boiling point ≤ 65 °C) in low-boiling groups 1 and 2 Important: usage limitations for low boiling groups 1 + 2 (see DGUV Rules 112-190; filters are single use)
Filter Type HG-P3
Colour code – red/white Protects against: mercury Note: The maximum period of use against mercury is 50 hours
Max. permitted concentration when using a half mask: 1000 ppm, but no more than 10 times the workplace exposure limit (WEL) Max. permitted concentration when using a full face mask: 1000 ppm, but no more than 20 times the workplace exposure limit (WEL)
Max. permitted concentration when using a half mask: 5000 ppm, but no more than 10 times the workplace exposure limit (WEL) Max. permitted concentration when using a full face mask: 5000 ppm, but no more than 20 times the workplace exposure limit (WEL)

EN 149 Standard explained

There are 3 classes of masks as defined by the standard:

FFP1 = Lowest class of protection

FFP2 = Higher class of protection

FFP3 = Highest level of protection

EN 149:2001- A1:2009 is the European Standard that covers technical specifications for respiratory protective devices – filtering half masks to protect against particles.

Here are the three mandatory tests conducted under the standard:

1. Total inward leakage

This test measures the probability of the respiratory mask to protect the wearer against potential hazards. A test subject wearing the particle mask walks in an enclosed test room, with a constant concentration of sodium chloride aerosol. While the subject breathes, the air inside the mask is sampled and analysed to determine which % of sodium chloride could pass through the mask.

FFP 1 2 3 Inward leakage table

The lower the percentage the higher the protection

2. Penetration of filter material

The goal of this test is to measure the filtering power of the masks. This test is carried out by exposing a dummy head with a mask to 120mg of 2 test aerosols (Sodium chloride and paraffin oil). The standard defines the maximum admitted penetration % of the 2 aerosols, for FFP1/FFP2 and FFP3 masks.

FFP 1 2 3 penetration level

The higher the penetration levels the lower the protection

3. Breathing resistance

This test assesses the ability of the filtering mask to provide protection while allowing the wearer to breathe easily.

FFP 1 2 3 breathing resistance

The permitted resistance is lower for FFP1 because it’s a lighter mask and it’s higher for FFP2 and FFP3 as they are thicker.
