Description

The ClearMask™

Designed to block the transfer of aerosols, fluids and sprays using an anti-fogging plastic barrier. Most importantly, there is no airflow through the impervious plastic barrier, therefore bacterial filtration efficiency, particle filtration efficiency and differential pressure tests are not applicable:

  • The ClearMask™ meets the applicable standards for fluid resistance (ASTM F1862: 160 mmHg) and flammability.
  • The ClearMask™ is non-sterile and single-use only and are not intended to be reprocessed or re-used.

For instructions on how to use the ClearMask™ please visit:    www.theclearmask.com/user-manual or watch the video below.

Recently the mask has been approved for use by the UK Government in the NHS  and has been popular in educational and retail environments. The ClearMask™ allows visibility of the entire face and facial expressions, making mask wearing communication easier. Transparent masks are ideal for use by; those who are deaf or hard of hearing, care homes and the elderly, schools and teachers, interpreters and translators, people working with those experiencing confusion, stress, or anxiety, customer-facing employees and many others.

We recommend performing your own risk assessments for using this mask in line with your own policies.

If you or the wearer requires PPE then we recommend using FFP2 or FFP3 masks – this product is not sold as PPE.

Where can I use a ClearMask™?

The ClearMask™ has a clear front, making the mouth and face visible to facilitate communication with service users who rely on lip-reading and use facial expression to support communication; this includes people who are deaf, have a learning disability, autism or dementia.

The ClearMask face mask provides splash protection for the wearer in the same way that a type IIR surgical face mask does https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/wuhan-novel-coronavirus-infection-prevention-and-control. However, since the product has not been tested by regulators in the same way as a type IIR or type II surgical face mask, to show protection from the wearer to the patient, health and social care providers must risk assess the appropriate use of the product.

We believe there is nothing on the UK market that provides the same quality and suitability.

Approval for use of ClearMask™ face masks

ClearMask™ face masks are approved by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for use during the COVID-19 pandemic under the essential technical specification guidance  https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/technical-specifications-for-personal-protective-equipment-ppe).

FAQs

Why is the ClearMask™ important?

Over half of communication is visual. We often depend on facial expressions and visual cues when we communicate with others. As humans we are highly attuned to facial expressions and emotions, even on a subconscious level.

The ability to see others' facial expressions and emotions can improve the patient-provider relationship and quality of care. When individuals are able to see each other's faces and smiles, outcomes such as patient satisfaction, trust, and health can improve.¹²³

Learn more about the ClearMask's features

How do I wear the ClearMask™?

The mask is available in two different strap styles, EZ-Adjuster and tie-on. Check out our user manual and demo video on how to properly wear the ClearMask™. Instructions in English, Spanish and French are available.

Does the ClearMask™ provide as much protection as a traditional mask? Does it protect me against COVID-19?

Traditional masks are designed to block bodily fluids and particulate materials away from the wearer’s face. The ClearMask™ serves the same functions as traditional masks and provides a full, anti-fog plastic barrier, which helps prevent particles or droplets from getting through. The ClearMask™ is not airtight along the sides of the mask, where air circulation occurs, thus allowing for comfort and breathability. All traditional masks have gaps on the sides, so this design is not entirely unique to the ClearMask™. The ClearMask™ is not an N95 respirator or FFP2, FFP3; only CE marked FFP2 and FFP3 respirators do not have gaps and are able to filter, with a full seal when fit-tested and properly worn.

What is the ASTM level rating for the ClearMask™?

The ClearMask™ meets the applicable ASTM Level 3 standards for fluid resistance (ASTM F1862: 160 mmHg) and flammability (16 CFR Part 1610: Flame Spread = 1). Because there is no airflow through the plastic barrier, bacterial filtration efficiency, particle filtration efficiency and differential pressure tests are not applicable to the ClearMask™.

Do the masks fog up?

The mask's plastic barrier has an anti-fog coating that minimizes fogging when the wearer is speaking or breathing. The mask is designed for indoors settings and recommended for use at room temperature, in ventilated, low-humidity environments, such as indoor offices or clinics. The masks are also single-use only and is not intended to be reused.

Is the ClearMask™ reusable?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorised the ClearMask™ for single-use only and is not intended to be reused. We cannot recommend or provide advice on cleaning methods.

The mask is designed for indoors settings and recommended for use at room temperature in ventilated, low-humidity environments, such as indoor offices or clinics.

Can the ClearMask™ be recycled?

The ClearMask's plastic barrier is made of a recyclable material, and can be physically separated from the rest of the mask to be recycled via standard recycling practices in your community and home.

The foam portions at the top and bottom of the mask can also be separated to recycle via your local foam recycling program; click here to find your closest foam recycling drop-off location. Some cities and counties also collect foam as part of their standard curbside collection programs.

Masks used in hospitals and medical institutions must be disposed according to local biohazard regulations.

Are there different sizes?

The ClearMask™ is one size only and is designed to fit adult faces. The mask can be adjusted for a tighter or more personalised fit.

Is the mask breathable?

The ClearMask™ is not airtight along the sides of the mask where air circulation occurs allowing for comfort and breathability. All traditional masks have gaps on the sides, so this design is not entirely unique to the ClearMask™; the only masks that don't have gaps are respirators that are properly fit tested. The ClearMask™ provides an impervious frontal barrier against fluids and sprays, performing the same functions as traditional masks.

Is the mask latex-free?

Yes, the ClearMask™ is latex-free.

Does the ClearMask replace sign language interpreters?

No. Because the ClearMask™ is an auxiliary aid, it is only designed to improve communication between all parties, not to replace the users’ preferred accommodations. Healthcare providers should always ask their patients about their preferred accommodations before administering care.
