3M 8833 FFP3 Mask

3M 8833 Disposable Respirator has been designed with comfort in mind, the super soft cushioned lining provides instant yet lasting comfort. Protects against dusts and water and oil based mists found in a wide variety of industrial applications and other work situations requiring FFP3 protection. The 3M 8833 respirator has exceptional comfort because of an advanced soft facepiece sealing ring which provides a good fit over a wide range of face sizes. The 8833 features an exhalation valve that helps reduce moisture build-up in certain work conditions. The adjustable nose clip also helps ensure a comfortable and secure fit.

The 3M 8833 has been shown to meet the Basic Safety Requirements under Article 10 and 11B of the European Community Directive 89/686/EEC. The product is CE marked.

Standards

The product has been tested to the European Norm EN149:2001 and has met the requirements of category FFP3 in this standard. The main performance tests in this standard are:

The product has an Assigned Protection Factor of 20; i.e., it can be used in atmospheres containing up to 20 times the Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) of particulate contaminants. Nominal Protection Factor = 50

Warnings

As with the use of any respiratory device, the wearer must first be trained in the proper use of the product. This product does not protect the wearer against gases, vapours, solvents from paint spray operations or atmospheres containing less than 19.5% oxygen. Use only in adequately ventilated areas containing sufficient oxygen to support life. Do not use when concentrations of contaminants are immediately dangerous to life or health. Leave the area immediately if:

  • Breathing becomes difficult
  • Dizziness or other distress occurs

Discard and replace respirator if it becomes damaged or breathing resistance becomes excessive or at the end of the shift. Never alter or modify this device. The 8833 is intended to be a single shift device.

  • R [Reusable]: Faceseal can be cleaned, disinfected and used for more than one shift.
  • D: These masks have passed the optional Dolomite clogging test, for better breathing resistance over a longer period.
  • NR [Non Reusable]: Disposable. Comfortable and durable throughout the whole shift.

Medical Surgical Masks 

EN 14683 is a standard that medical face masks in Europe are required to comply with. The testing requirements for this standard include bacterial filtration efficiency, differential pressure (breathability), splash resistance and microbial cleanliness. Medical masks are surgical or procedure masks that are flat or pleated (some are like cups); they are affixed to the head with strapsa. Wearing a medical mask is one of the prevention measures to limit spread of certain respiratory diseases.

FFP3 Masks

The need for FFP3 Mask (oral nasal disposable mask respiratory protection) to be worn is identified through clinical risk assessment. The mask is used to protect against respiratory borne pathogens. To use these masks, relevant staff must be ‘face fit tested’ to ensure that they can achieve a suitable face fit of the mask and that it operates at the required efficiency. Filtering Facepieces (FFPs) are disposable Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) for protection against dusts, particles and aerosols. They are often referred to as ‘disposable dust masks’, are widely used, and generally require no cleaning or  maintenance. They are available in three classes: FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3, with the higher numbers corresponding to better filtering efficiency. As with all types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) sold in the UK, they must comply with the EU PPE Directive 89/686/EEC. Half Masks

Half masks are respiratory protection masks that can be used in combination with gas and particulate filters. Depending on your choice of filter, they can offer protection against harmful substances such as dust, aerosols, gases and/or vapours. The masks cover the mouth and nose. In comparison to full masks, half mask respirators are relatively lightweight and compact. They can be used for a range of applications requiring gas and particulate filters. P1 Filters + Half Masks

This combination may be used at contaminant concentrations up to 4 times the workplace exposure limit (WEL). It protects against non-toxic water and oil based particles, but not against carcinogenic and radioactive substances, airborne biological agents of risk groups 2 + 3 and enzymes. The total leakage permitted by this combination is a maximum of 2%. At least 80% of contaminants are filtered out of the air. This combination is typically used in environments with low levels of dust not harmful to health.

P2 Filters + Half Mask

This combination may be used at contaminant concentrations up to 10 times the workplace exposure limit (WEL). It protects against harmful water and oil based particles, but not against carcinogenic substances, radioactive particles, airborne biological agents of risk group 3 and enzymes. The total leakage permitted by this combination is a maximum of 2%. At least 94% of contaminants are filtered out of the air. This combination is typically used for handling softwood, metal, plastics (not PVC), and oil mists.

P3 Filters + Half Mask

This combination may be used at contaminant concentrations up to 20 times the workplace exposure limit (WEL). It protects against harmful and carcinogenic water and oil based particles as well as against radioactive particles, airborne biological agents of risk groups 2 + 3 and enzymes. The total leakage permitted by this combination is a maximum of 2%. 99.5% of contaminants are filtered out of the air. This combination is typically used for handling heavy metals, hardwood, brake dust, radioactive substances and pathogens (such as viruses, bacteria and fungal spores). It is also used for stainless steel welding.

Full Face Masks

Full face mask respirators are mask bodies that can be combined as needed with particulate filters, gas filters and combination filters.

The total leakage permitted by this combination lies at a maximum of 0.05%. At least 99.95% of contaminants are filtered out of the air. This combination is typically used for handling heavy metals, hardwood, brake dust, radioactive substances and pathogens (such as viruses, bacteria and fungal spores).

EN 149 Standard explained

There are 3 classes of masks as defined by the standard:

FFP1 = Lowest class of protection

FFP2 = Higher class of protection

FFP3 = Highest level of protection

EN 149:2001- A1:2009 is the European Standard that covers technical specifications for respiratory protective devices – filtering half masks to protect against particles. 

Here are the three mandatory tests conducted under the standard:

TOTAL INWARD LEAKAGE

1. Total inward leakage

This test measures the probability of the respiratory mask to protect the wearer against potential hazards. A test subject wearing the particle mask walks in an enclosed test room, with a constant concentration of sodium chloride aerosol. While the subject breathes, the air inside the mask is sampled and analysed to determine which % of sodium chloride could pass through the mask.

PENETRATION OF FILTER MATERIAL

2. Penetration of filter material 

The goal of this test is to measure the filtering power of the masks. This test is carried out by exposing a dummy head with a mask to 120mg of 2 test aerosols (Sodium chloride and paraffin oil). The standard defines the maximum admitted penetration % of the 2 aerosols, for FFP1/FFP2 and FFP3 masks.

3. Breathing resistance 

This test assesses the ability of the filtering mask to provide protection while allowing the wearer to breathe easily.

The permitted resistance is lower for FFP1 because it’s a lighter mask and it’s higher for FFP2 and FFP3 as they are thicker.
