Our Basic Guide to Fire Extinguishers

Our fire safety products are suitable for use in every environment including at the office, in commercial and public buildings, on construction sites, in hotels and in your home. There is a fire extinguisher to tackle any fire. You should use a dry powder fire extinguisher on wood, paper or textile fires, flammable liquids and electricity under 1000 volts. You must not use them on cooking oils or electricity more than 1000 volts.

The foam fire extinguisher can be used on rubber, wood, paper and textile materials and flammable liquids such as kerosene or petrol. However, you should not use a foam fire extinguisher on cooking oil fires. You can use a water fire extinguishers wood, paper, fabrics and other A class fire risks.

If you have a commercial kitchen, you should have a wet chemical fire extinguisher.  This is for cooking oil fires.

Fire Extinguisher colour coding

Fire extinguishers must conform to BS EN3 Standard, which specifies that their body is coloured red. A small coloured band indicates the type of fire extinguisher – red for water, white and red for water mist, cream for foam, blue for dry powder, yellow for wet chemical, green for clean agent and black for CO2 extinguishers.
